The Moon Hill

the Moon Hill is about 50 minutes’ bike from Yangshuo. Named for the crescent shaped cave running through the moon,the Moon Hill is one of the highlights in Yangshuo. It consists of two peaks, the higher one in the front is known as Moon Hill. The hilltop features a running-through cave that measures more than 30 meters in width and height and takes the shape of a full moon. If viewing from a moving vehicle, as your position changes you will see the dramatic lunar cycle from a thin crescent to a bright white ball. The journey up to the summit is an arduous one which covers 800 steep steps. The scenery overlooking the countryside through the half moon, however, is well worth the trek, which is probably the best you will get in the area.

At foot of the hill lies a tiny village called Moon Hill Village. The village offers a haven for those who would like to stay off the touristy places and around Yangshuo. It is a tranquil village free from the pollution, stress and turmoil that plague most of the cities we live. The traditional life style continues as time stands still here.

Every year in Mid-Autumn day, people of Moon Hill they will light up a grapefruit light, put them on the grass, and after mid-night, they will put these grapefruit lights on the Li River, make some wishes or pray, the view is so impressive. Light up the grapefruit light is a custom of Yangshuo, many visitors follow this custom too, the lights are easy to make, first you need to empty the grapefruit and then put a candle inside. The grapefruit is a local specialty from Shatian, Yangshuo.

How to get the Moon Hill
Take a Lipu-bound bus or a Gaotian-bound bus from Yangshuo Town and get off at Moon Hill. You can also get there by rental bike (5-10 yuan per day) or car.

Photography Tips for the Moon Hill
Moon Hill can be photographed in front lighting from far, moderate or close distance. A close shot can be taken by the roadside with a foreground while a distant image can be captured on Shangyue Road or in Licun Village (9-yuan entrance fee applies). Or you can follow the scenic road at the foot of the hill to Water Cave, an alternative shooting spot.
